The Importance of Human Rights Education in Africa Today

Published by Admin under HRO Main Blog

It is evident that the majority of people in Africa are each day been denied of the of their basic human rights by individuals, government or social groups knowingly or unknowingly. This is because the issue of people’s rights is only becoming new to many Africans considering the poverty rate in Africa, civil war, rapes, injustices, etc. One needs not to have a second thought of the need for human rights education in every sector of our African society.

Human rights education is very important in Africa today since it will help people know and understand that like every other person they are entitled to the same basic rights. It will help us understand and respect each others rights and many of the violence we unconsciously rained on one another will be avoided.

  • It will help poverty and injustices in Africa.
  • It will help us speak out for our rights and the rights of those who cannot speak for themselves.
  • The issue of child labor, girl’s education, gender equality and equal opportunity will be addressed.
  • It will promote and encourage good governance in Africa and help us practicalize democratic principal to the letter.

Young People Participation

It is a great opportunity for youth leaders, NGOs snd students to participate.  I feel it is important to be part of a global initiative as relate to human rights, HIV/ AIDS,etc.  When a oerson is trained morally and / or constructivrly, that person becomes more creative or disirous in his/her community or group.

  • To Learn from experts and practically implement.
  • To educate other peer groups and youth  leaders in and around Africa.
  • To help minimize or eradicate problems that is dangerous to our society today.
  • To learn about human rights and good governance that will foster peace building.
  • To collaborate with peer groups, youth organzations and youth leaders around the world to establish networks that will promote human rights, sustainable development, andd peace building.

International Cooperating Ministries

When the Muslims threatened to burn down a Tanzanian church, congregants began a 24 hour seven day a week prayer vigil that has continued for two years. Located between two Mosques and across the street from a witsh doctor, the Manzese church, sponsored by ICM donor partners, was an opposition stronghold.  While this congregation believed in God’s grace, even they were amazed at the answers to their prayers!

RYS Speaker presents at the United Nations

On February 27, 2007, Mrs. Rajashwari Menon, educator and Principal of SBOA school, India spoke to a group of about 150 individuals who participated in a Parallel Event Workshop, part of the 51st session of the Commission on the Status of Woman. The event was co-sponsored by the Women’s Federation for World Peace International, Bridgeport International Academy and Religious Youth Service.

The workshop pressented best practices in the fields of education and cross-cultural exchange service work that has suceeded in transforming cultural, ethical, and religious value systems to enhance the status of the girl child.  The practices presented facilitate acceptance of the diversity of girl children, their status and potential.  Mrs. menon’s paper focused on the importance of values education, in particular in India, as a means of improving the status of the girl child. She spoke not only about education that is needed by young girls to develop their sense of value and self esteem, but also about the reality that, to truly make the necessary changes, young boys and entire communities must adjust the way they think about women to liberate them to fulfill their proper role in society.

Creating a place for Children to Live, Learn, and Grow in Uganda.

The Outreach to Unfortunate Children’s Hurts.  This program TOUCH cares for children who have lost their family due to war or AIDS in Kampala, Uganda, Africa with assistance from caring groups and individuals.  Friends of TOUCH exists to empower their work by informing the American public of the great need and vision for children in Uganda. The goal is to provide something more than temporary relief. If the cycle of violence and poverty will be broken, it is necessary to provide an environment where children can live, learn, and grow in safety. They need role models to show them how to do more than survive.  This is the dream of the TOUCH Children’s Village. Here, children can grow up in a real home, with a small family of children and loving caretakers. Each child will recieve education, medical care, food, and spiritual and vocational training in a safe environment. There is just one catch. We still need to build it first. So we are asking that you become a Friend of TOUCH.  Invest in a child’s Future by helping to build this children’s village, by telling others about the project, and by remembering the children of Uganda in your prayers.

Children’s Village

  • Full Primary and Secondary school
  • Fifty Homes, each housing ten children and a caretaker
  • Safe Playground / Recreational Area.
  • Farm Project to provide food for the children.
  • A Chapel for the Bible Traing and spiritual Development.
  • A Health Care Center to meet the medical needs of the chidren.
  • Vocational School for older children to learn work skills.
